Fresh Grocer supermarket opens in New Brunswick, addressing ‘food desert’ challenge

November 9, 2012

Originally publishd in NJBIZ After several delays in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, public- and private-sector groups were finally able to enjoy the fruits of their labor today with the opening of a new full-service fresh food supermarket in New Brunswick, which represents the urban center’s first successful grocery store development in more than two decades. The new 50,000-square-foot Fresh Grocer is part of Wellness Plaza, a mixed-use redevelopment project by New Brunswick Development Corp. that includes a 60,000-square-foot fitness center, a 1,275-space parking garage and, eventually, an elevated walkway connected to the train station. According to Devco President Christopher J. Paladino, Wellness Plaza is the second phase of a three-part plan to redevelop New Brunswick into a transit village. In February, Devco completed the plan’s first phase — a $150 million project to open 650,000 square feet of mixed-use commercial and residential space — and the development firm expects […]

Mayor’s Wellness Effort Makes Strides

October 23, 2012

Originally published in The Red Bank Green An enthusiastic throng of participants hit the pavement in Red Bank for the Community Kick Start Walkon Saturday. More than 50 adults and children piled into Marine Park, grabbed t-shirts that read “Today, Tomorrow, Together,” and marched a one-mile loop from Marine Park to Riverside Gardens and back. The event, which officials said is likely to become an annual affair, marks the first public endeavor of the Mayor’s Wellness Committee, a new committee to promote healthy living among Red Bank. The committee’s previous activity, a health fair for borough employees, with a weight loss competition similar to the setup of TV’s The Biggest Loser, has already yielded big gains – or losses, that is. Councilman Art Murphy leads the competition, having dropped 34 pounds so far. Read full story SHARE:

Conquering the Food Desert

October 1, 2012

Originally published in South Jersey Magazine Camden can be a tough place to grow up. Sometimes, food is hard to come by – healthy food is almost impossible. And because your parents are worried about your safety, you have to stay in the house after school. No walking to the playground with your friends. No soccer practice. It’s understandable then that the city’s childhood obesity rate is skyrocketing. Enter one large, committed group of people – from all walks of life – who are joining an initiative to take on the huge task of reversing those obesity numbers by 2014. They’re fighting in a food desert, where crime is keeping families out of city parks, and supermarkets simply don’t exist. But healthy kids are reason to battle against the odds, they say. And so they will, determined to make a difference in the lives of Camden’s children.  Read more…. SHARE:

Serving Up a Healthy Lunch for NJ Schoolkids

September 18, 2012

Originally published by NJSpotlight The line at Monument Elementary School’s cafeteria was long, but rather than waiting to be served a typical lunch of processed, high-fat food, the students were waiting to grab their lunch from the school’s new salad bar. “I was surprised to see that the kids preferred the fruits and vegetables over the processed food,” said Bernadette Trapp, the school’s principal. “I thought we would have problems getting them to eat it, but they seem willing to try it.” Those eager kids are the beneficiaries of the federal Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, which went into effect at the start of the 2012 school year. From The Inside Track: Giving Play a Chance

August 30, 2012

Originally published by PreventObesity.net For years, teachers and faculty at Monument Elementary School in Trenton, N.J., feared recess. The playground at Monument was nothing more than an empty, broken blacktop, one which the school’s principal described as a “desolate desert.” When the students came back to class they were often bloody and bruised, because their run-down playground simply wasn’t suited for play. All that changed earlier this month, when more than 400 volunteers came together at Monument Elementary School to build a brand-new playground. The build was a culmination of more than a year of fundraising and planning led by a coalition of partners that included the New Jersey Partnership for Healthy Kids (NJPHK) and the YMCA of Trenton.
