Co-sponsored by the Greater Mercer Transportation Management Association (GMTMA), Bike Fest is an annual free community-wide event where kids learned bike safety tips and techniques, as well as demonstrated their bicycle handling skills on a four-station bike course. Last year, nearly 100 local children participated in the event. Dr. Fredrick McDowell is the newly appointed Superintendent of Trenton Public Schools. A native of North Carolina, McDowell is from a family of educators dating back as far as the 1960s through the early 2000s. However, he candidly admits that it wasn’t until later in life that he understood the impact that education has on an individual’s day-to-day life. He most recently served as the Deputy Chief Academic Support Officer for the School District of Philadelphia, which attends to 130,000 students. He started his educational career as a Career and Technical Education Teacher in Durham Public Schools and became Principal in the Boston Public Schools district. In 2013, he became a Denver Public Schools Instructional Superintendent. He is also a 7th Degree Black Belt Grandmaster in Tae Kwon-Do, responsible for the overall development and general training of martial arts instructors and their students. In his short tenure as Trenton’s Superintendent of Schools, he already has embarked on a number of initiatives that are intended to help school leaders grow, and provide a supportive learning atmosphere for student success. New Jersey native and former Olympic athlete Joetta Clark Diggs made a special appearance at Trenton’s Greenwood Ave. Farmers Market on Monday, August 28, 2017. The four-time Olympic competitor led an exercise routine and a water balloon toss at 1:00 pm to kick off the free community event. “It was exciting to have Olympian Joetta Clark Diggs join us for the afternoon to lead activities for the community during Water Fest,” said Chelsea Jackson, Greenwood Ave. Farmers Market manager. Clark Diggs is a four-time Olympic runner and founder of the Joetta Clark Diggs Sports Foundation. She also serves as a spokesperson for the Mayors Wellness Campaign, a program of the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute. The Greenwood Ave. Farmers Market continues to be the only farmers market in New Jersey to offer free USDA summer meals to children. The summer dinner program officially kicked off on Monday, July 10 and will run through August 28. The program provides free, healthy meals to Trenton kids ages 18 and under and will continue every Monday from 3:30 pm-5:30 pm during the summer months. According to the USDA, nearly 1 in six children in American lived in a household characterized by food insecurity in 2015. In New Jersey, 13.1 of children live in food-insecure households. During the event, children participated in educational activities at water-themed stations around the market and even play on a 22-ft. water slide. “We want the community to understand the importance of getting enough to drink whether they are playing sports, traveling, or just sitting in the sun,” said Chelsea Jackson, Greenwood Ave. Farmers Market manager. Activities include various water-themed STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) exhibits, a sand art creation booth, and games that include fishing for prizes. During the 2016-2017 school year, 14 Trenton elementary schools participated in The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, a federally assisted program providing free fresh fruits and vegetables to students during the school day, outside of their regular meal. “Providing fresh fruits and vegetables is one way to improve children’s overall diet and create healthier eating habits, which will benefit their present and future health,” said Denise Holguin, Director of Meal Program Growth for Aramark, the food service provider for Trenton schools. The program helps schools create healthier school environments by providing healthier food choices; expanding the variety of fruits and vegetables children experience; and increasing children’s fruit and vegetable consumption. If you were out and about in Trenton on May 19, you might have noticed someone intercepting bicyclists to provide unique safety cards in honor of Bike to Work Day. The “someone” was Jay Watson, Vice President of D&R Greenway Land Trust. Each card Watson handed out contained a one dollar bill folded into a directional arrow to get bicyclists riding RIGHT! “I wanted to develop a way to approach riders to change the way they rode their bicycles in the city,” said Watson. “I wanted them to ride safely.” The bicyclist intercepts during Bike to Work Week was the first roll out of the safety cards. Matching Dollar Incentives, Local Entertainment, and Summer Meals for Kids Planned for Season The Greenwood Ave. Farmers Market will reopen for its third season as the safe and inviting community gathering place for residents to have access to healthy, affordable food options, health screenings, and summer fun. Located at 427 Greenwood Avenue, Trenton, NJ 08609 (behind the Trenton Transit Center), the farmers market will be open every Monday, starting June 12 through October 23, 2017, 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm (except holidays). Each week, the market will feature Jersey Fresh fruits and vegetables, tropical fruits, meat, eggs, and bakery items. For the first time this year, the market will offer seafood products, fruit smoothies and ready-to-eat meals from local food trucks.
