NJPHK’s Deputy Director Dr. Darrin Anderson served as a speaker at the recent Emerging Multicultural Leadership experience (EMLE) Conference. Held at Rutgers University, Newark on May 20, EMLE is a learning experience designed to provide emerging professional staff of color the opportunity to become further engaged and connected to the Y Movement. Additional speakers included Lucria Ortiz, Senior Director of Fund Development and Communications for the YMCA of Greater New York, Ebony Conely-Young, Executive Director, Long Island City YMCA and Bertram Lawson II, Vice President, Operations, Camp Services & Diversity/Inclusion/Global Engagement, Philadelphia Freedom Valley YMCA. If you were out and about in Trenton on May 19, you might have noticed someone intercepting bicyclists to provide unique safety cards in honor of Bike to Work Day. The “someone” was Jay Watson, Vice President of D&R Greenway Land Trust. Each card Watson handed out contained a one dollar bill folded into a directional arrow to get bicyclists riding RIGHT! “I wanted to develop a way to approach riders to change the way they rode their bicycles in the city,” said Watson. “I wanted them to ride safely.” The bicyclist intercepts during Bike to Work Week was the first roll out of the safety cards. Watson’s primary goal is to get everyone riding on the right side of the road. Motorists tend to scan for traffic following the rules for cars, so bicyclists need to be seen in that traffic. Dates Set for Camden Night Gardens and Camden Jam, New Programming Unveiled On May 9, 2017, Camden Mayor Dana L. Redd and Cooper’s Ferry Partnership Vice President Meishka L. Mitchell unveiled the Connect the Lots program for 2017. Get Healthy Camden is teaming up with Virtua Health Systems to provide a mobile farmers market for Camden and Burlington counties’ residents this summer as part of Connect the Lots. Now in its third year, Connect the Lots is a community-driven initiative that utilizes underused and vacant spaces in the city for healthy, fun, and safe activities for residents. Starting on June 29 through September, the Mobile Market will set up shop every Thursday at Roosevelt Plaza Park. Matching Dollar Incentives, Local Entertainment, and Summer Meals for Kids Planned for Season The Greenwood Ave. Farmers Market will reopen for its third season as the safe and inviting community gathering place for residents to have access to healthy, affordable food options, health screenings, and summer fun. Located at 427 Greenwood Avenue, Trenton, NJ 08609 (behind the Trenton Transit Center), the farmers market will be open every Monday, starting June 12 through October 23, 2017, 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm (except holidays). Each week, the market will feature Jersey Fresh fruits and vegetables, tropical fruits, meat, eggs, and bakery items. For the first time this year, the market will offer seafood products, fruit smoothies and ready-to-eat meals from local food trucks. Annual event encourages kids to stay active and keep learning all summer long by Cara Morello Director of Administration/Operations, CCAYMCA On Saturday, April 29, the YMCA of Vineland participated in the annual YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day® free community event to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active throughout the summer. Healthy Kids Day is part of the Y’s national initiative to improve health and well-being for kids and families. The event ran from 12:00-2:00 pm at the YMCA of Vineland and featured activities such as local healthy vendors, an inflatable obstacle course, outdoor games, crafts, swimming, music, giveaways, contests, and more to motivate and teach families how to develop healthy routines at home. Cumberland County’s top health experts gathered to hold a public health equity forum during Minority Health Month to focus on disease prevention and general wellness for its residents. According to RWJF’s County Health Rankings, Cumberland County has been ranked last in overall health standings for NJ, and almost half of its residents are African-American or Hispanic. This forum, themed ‘Bridging Health Equity Across Communities’, was one of three held during the month of April and discussed working together to eliminate health inequality across the state and county. The forum was held on Wednesday, April 12 at Cumberland County College’s Conference Center in Vineland, NJ from 8:30-12:30. It’s that time of year again! New Brunswick Tomorrow (NBT) hosted the first Ciclovia of the year on Saturday, April 23. From 11 am to 4 pm, hundreds of New Brunswick residents took to the streets to walk, ride bikes, and play. Originating in Bogotá, Colombia, Ciclovias have become a community event that helps promote healthy living where people are encouraged to get up and get moving. Since 2013, the New Brunswick Ciclovia has had thousands of residents come out and enjoy fun activities with their families and neighbors. This free event, sponsored by the City of New Brunswick, NBT, Rutgers University and Johnson & Johnson, covered about three miles and included various physical activities for attendees to enjoy. The YMCA of Newark and Vicinity is hitting the road and offering free programs for residents across five wards via its newly branded Y on Wheels mobile van. The Y on Wheels van made its initial debut on April 29 during a free, YMCA Healthy Kids Day celebration at Military Park in downtown Newark. More than 400 children attended this annual event. The van provides high-quality fitness for children and youth such as basketball, arts & crafts. The van is also available for local health fairs and block parties.
